VERY GOOD RECORDS 1994-2005

BLACK ZEPWARDS & CUT ARSES

Best info on the first ten records or so is provided by Simon Harris of former "SPEEDER MAGAZINE", UK here
It sums up almost everything released until 1997, when a second batch of releases came out.
The final effort was to reissue "old school" weirdness and avantgarbage to attract a wider public, including albums by:

    • PHONOPHOBIA, 1979-1983 (released in 1998)
    • FRIEDER BUTZMANN "Bunte Flügel" (authorized release as "EISENGRAU", 1999)
    • DIE TÖDLICHE DORIS "Der siebenköpfige Informator, Das typische Ding und mehr" (authorized and released as "PISSPOTTPLATTEN", 1999)
    • TROYA "Point Of Eruption" (1976/2002)

The above album by DIE TÖDLICHE DORIS led to a contract of a release of their old tape material in early 2003, a boxed set double album called "ANGELDUST"
There are two editions of the set:
    1) issued in 2003, approximately 200 copies, 220 Grams vinyl pressing in black innersleeve, each set containing 4 inserts: a two-sided tracklist, a two colour print, a handnumbered certificate and a rag with a "DIE TÖDLICHE DORIS"-label sewed on, some of the certificates were autographed by Prof. Müller, a few of the boxes (i.e. around 10-15) foiled in grey linen, 4 or 5 plain black boxes given away as promos
    2) around 100 copies, late 2004, 180 Grams vinyl in white innersleeve, each set containing three inserts: a two-sided tracklist, a two colour print, a handnumbered certificate (overcounting 200), some copies in grey box again.

The last 100 pairs of the set have become distributed in a simple, pasted LP-cover in 2008 without any certification or other artful gimmicks.

In the meantime NORBERT SCHILLING of "PLATE LUNCH RECORDS" had died in 2001 and left some albums to be released, of which one part was given permission for release in the USA to Marc McNulty and some others to VERY GOOD RECORDS in Germany, including four albums by CONRAD SCHNITZLER:
      • ROT
      • BLAU
      • GELB
      • LIVE ACTION 1977
The fifth one is a CD reissue of the SEESSELBERG album from 1973, published in 2003. This was a real funny one to do as well.
Apart from the US "color plastic case issue" (which doesn´t count by legal means) it was planned to be remastered from an original vinyl record, but all attempts at private hi-end freak home studios, "CEDAR NO-NOISE STUDIO MARCKMANN" in Hamburg and some Japanese laser-turntable facility failed and just took a lot of money.
Of these remaster tapes the "CEDAR NO-NOISE"-version was given an O.K. by Prof. Seessselberg to be released, but cancelled after the CD edition had come out at the beginning of 2003.
Surprisingly then a tape-reel with an old recording of the album occured and was used for a second edition of the CDafter the first had been withdrawn, i.e. sent back to the author. (about a dozen copies of the first issue had been sent around for promotional and testing purpose)
Copies of the second edition are still available.

      SHORT STORY

Here´s a list of all records released since late 1994.
The early ones had catalog numbers, but past No. 8 or so are not genuine.
Some releases were planned and given cat.-no., but cancelled later.
As releases became more sporadic or were co-productions with other labels, catalogue numbers seemed totally pointless.
Most of those subsequent releases, i.e. past that COITS album, only refer to "VERY GOOD RECORDS" without stating any catalog number.
A few of them were produced and distributed as "VERY GOOD RECORDS", but don´t refer to it directly, i.e. ZEBRA PUKE, and CHAOSFRONT (with a sticker put over original address on back).

      It´s a real novelty item.

      SOME COMMENTS

      STEVE ANDREWS Sound Of One
PICTURE--IF YOU WILL--A WELSH NEIL YOUNG (PART "HARVEST", PART "STARS AND BARS"), A SMATTERING OF DYLAN, AND A TOUCH OF SPACE ROCK!

STEVE ANDREWS, Sound of one (D/97 Very Good)
This a guy from Cardiff who does all instruments and voices on the LP.
Most are blues-tinged, but there are some unexpected songs too. A fine loner record this is.
CONTACT : STEVE JOHNSON, 3 DUNCAN CLOSE, ST. MELLONS, CARDIFF, WALES)
(s.o.) Iceland´s Stilluppsteypa began its life as a guitar-bass-drum trio. Their earliest long player, 95´s "Car Dirty With Jam on a Busy Street" LP on Germany's Very Good Records sees them sounding like a more restrained, garage rock-influenced Boredoms, playing a spastic music full of shrieks, tribal drums, surf guitar riffs, tape collage, and a penchant for the absurd.
      TROYA- Point Of Eruption, 1976/2002:
official RE of rare krautrock private pressing from 1976 in original cover - including six tracks by progressive artrock quartet with nice guitar, organ, some flute and English lyrics - comparable to early NOVALIS or EPIDAURUS -

      sesselberg:

Seesselberg Synthetik 1 Private pressing SYN 1
Düsseldorf was the electronic / industrial wasteland that spawned Kraftwerk, Cluster and Neu.
It was also the stomping ground for Eckhart and Wolf-J. Seesselberg who partly produced this excellent album there (the other location being Hamburg). Rather than go for extended electronic drones, however, the brothers came up with a selection of shorter pieces, adding variety to their record which others failed to imitate.
Seesselberg have been compared (somewhat clumsily) to early Kraftwerk and Conrad Schnitzler's Kluster, but to my ears they have more in common with New York's Suicide and The Silver Apples (minus the vocals natch!) than any of their German contemporaries.
There is pure avant-pop being played out here and someone should reissue this classic pronto
Only 600 copies* were originally pressed up in 1973 and these have long been snapped up by collectors or overpaid disc jocks who feel the need to sample stuff like Seesselberg into their retarded backing tracks for E-guzzling dancing fools.

      * (the CD-booklet refers to an original vinyl edition of 1000 copies though)
      A pox on them!
